Radishes: Our Humble Beginning

Growing Radishes and Fresh Vegetables

Miedema Produce started in 1971 when brothers Gerald and Ron Miedema raised their first crops in Jenison, Michigan. Gerald and Ron learned from their father, Ted, who had farmed in the Netherlands, immigrated to the United States, and used his vegetable growing expertise to make his start in the United States.

Miedema Produce began growing radishes, bright and crisp; the hallmark product grown and produced today. Buyers knew who grew the best; Miedema Produce has become one of the largest growers and shippers of radishes in the world.

In 1973, the company moved operations to its current location in Hudsonville, Michigan, and soon added celeryparsnips, and turnips to meet the demand by their customers. As the business continued to grow, the company added vegetables, such as onionscucumbers, peppers, summer squash  and lettuces to the product line. Expansion projects were undertaken in 1973, 1976, and 1980 to keep up with the global demand.

Miedema Produce For You® brand radishes were grown in Florida so the company could supply customers year around. In the search for a better soil and more reliable growing conditions, Miedema Produce opened farms in Phoenix, Arizona in 1998. In the Valley of the Sun, Miedema found the perfect conditions for growing the finest radishes in the country. For You® radishes are now grown November – May in Arizona and from June – October in the rich soil of Michigan.

Today, Miedema Produce ships more than a hundred different products to customers all over the United States and Canada. The organization now operates from new offices and state-of-the-art-production facilities incorporating that latest in production efficiencies and food safety. Refrigerated space was doubled and the temperature controlled production facility was increased by 30,000 sq. ft.
